Originally from small town Vermont and then New York City, Kathryn Kawecki (she/they) is now a Mid-Atlantic based theatre artist, mother, and educator living in Baltimore, MD.

  • Kathryn designs for DC/Baltimore area theatre companies including 1st Stage, 4615 Theatre Company, Contemporary American Theatre Festival, Flying V, Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, and the Hub with upcoming projects at INSeries and Spooky Action’s Innovative Directors Incubator. Her service work to DMV professional theatre includes having served as a judge for theatreWashington’s Helen Hayes Awards and her role as an Artistic Associate with 1st Stage. Regionally, she has designed in California (Sacramento Theatre Co.), Colorado (Creede Repertory Theatre, LOCAL, BETc), the Northeast (Capital Rep, Hangar Theatre, Lyric Stage of Boston, New Rep, Seacoast Rep, Greater Boston Stage Co, Boston Lyric Opera), and New York City (Ballybeg and the JENA co.) Her work has been nominated for Henry, Helen Hayes, New York Innovative Theatre, and IRNE Awards. As an early career designer, she was selected for USITT’s Young Designer’s Forum and wast the 2007 recipient of the USITT’s Young Designer’s Award for Scene Design sponsored by Rosebrand.

  • Kathryn is a dedicated educator and is currently a faculty member at Bowie State University, where she serves as Academic Program Coordinator for Theatre Arts. She has previously been an Adjunct Professor/Costume Designer for Gettysburg College and a Visiting Professor/Designer for North Dakota State University. Additionally, she has guest designed for academic theatre departments, high schools, and theatrical training programs including Boston Conservatory, Brown, Emerson College, McDaniel College, Providence College, UMBC, Groton School, Boston Children’s Theatre, and Dreamland Theatre. She has led workshops and presentations for KCACTF Region II, the Maryland Thespian Festival, Dresher Center’s Inclusion Imperative at UMBC, and USM’s Center for Academic Innovation.

    She earned a BA in Visual Art from Columbia University in New York City and an MFA in Scene Design from UNCSA in Winston-Salem, NC.
